Inuvik Twin Lakes | Jimmy Kalinek, Robert C. McLeod

Three-time MLARobert C. McLeodis up against GNWT worker Jimmy Kalinek in the 2015 race for Inuvik Twin Lakes.

The district takes in the west half of Inuvik (pop. 3,396), and includes industrial parks, public housing, and expensive new homes. Constituents are Gwich'in,Inuvialuit,Mtis and non-aboriginal.

This seat has been held by former mayors of Aklavik since its creation in 1999. Roger Allen won the riding in 1999 and 2003 but resigned in late 2004 over an expense scandal. He was replaced in a 2005 byelection by another former mayor of Aklavik, Robert C. McLeod, who defeated Pauline Gordon by just 11 votes.

McLeod won another close contest in 2007 before being acclaimed in 2011.

Voter turnout tends to be high here, although there have also beenlarge discrepancies between the number of registered voters and the number of eligiblevoters turning out to the polls, leading to turnout figures above sometimes well above 100 per cent.

Jimmy Kalinek

JimmyKalinek wasborn andraised inInuvik. He's a graduate of Samuel Hearne Secondary School and has worked for the N.W.T. government for 10 years, most recently as a highway transport officer with the Department of Transportation. He's also been a member of the Inuvik Hunters and Trappers Organization for six years, where he worked onwildlife, hunting and industry issues for Inuvialuit beneficiaries.

He wants to see more jobs for Inuvik residents. He also cites thecost of living, health and social services, education and culture, andhousing as crucial issues in this election. Hesays communication and regular consultation with residents is important.

Robert C. McLeod

A journeyman carpenter by trade, Robert C.McLeod was born in Aklavik and served on council and as mayor of that community in the 1980s. McLeod was first elected MLA for Inuvik Twin Lakesin a 2004 byelection, beatingsix other candidates. He was re-elected in 2007 and acclaimed in 2011. He has held several cabinet portfolios including Municipal and Community Affairs, and Lands, a department that was created following devolution.

McLeod says employmentfor Inuvikresidents is the most important issue in this election. He says good-paying jobs are the best way to deal with the high cost of living in the community. McLeod also says it's important for voters to choose the person who will work hardestto represent them.
