Ross River, Yukon, students head back to class

It's been almost two weeks since the Ross River School was shut down indefinitely. Late Wednesday, it was announced that students will be heading back to class by the end of the week.

Classes are resuming in temporary facilities after school deemed structurally unsound

Students in Ross River are returning to class this week, but not in the Ross River School.

The only school in the community of about 350 was closed indefinitely on Jan. 19 after the building was deemed unsafe. Staff had reported cracks in the walls, which ultimately led to concerns about the building's structural integrity.

Late Wednesday, it was announced that students will be heading back to class by the end of the week in various temporary facilities within the community.

The news came as a relief to parents and students.

"The kids, I think, are going nuts," says Billie Maje, whose Grade 8 daughter is one of the almost 50 students affected. "Just so bored."

Two classes resumed yesterday the kindergarteners and the Grade 10s.

As for the future of the school, Minister of Education Doug Graham says that's unknown.

"What we will be doing is taking a look at whether the school is salvageable and if it is, howlong it's going to take to repair it and how soon we can get the kids back into the school."

Regardless of what happens, Maje is now concerned about the workload her daughter and others will face.

"I'm just worried about all the time she's missed from school. "I'm sure my daughter is going to have a lot of work when she returns."
