Whitehorse airport tarmac work will need to be redone

The Yukon NDP wants to know if taxpayers are going to be on the hook for the cost of fixing deficiencies inupgrades done this summer on the tarmacat Whitehorse's airport.

Last summerthe apron at the airport where the planes parkwas replaced. Buta contractor error means the work now has to be redone.

The project was budgeted to cost $3.5 million.

MLA Lois Moorcroft wants to know how much of the cost of redoing the work will fall on the government.

"For most Yukoners, a mutually acceptable solution would be that the contractor fixes the deficiencies at no cost to Yukon government."

Highways and Public Works MinisterScott Kent acknowledged the deficiencies with the project.He said the government is in discussions with the contractor to find a solution

"Transportation engineering will continue a reviewof critical project issues that may strengthen our position in any negotiations."

Kent said it's too early to know what the cost will be.

Moorcroft also questioned the government about releasing a Transport Canada safety report about the tarmac replacement project. Kent says he hasn't reviewed the report yet and therefore can't table it.
