Whitehorse cenotaph may have to move from near City Hall

The city's war memorial is currently jammed into a small space between City Hall and the downtown fire hall. 'It's a safety issue and quite frankly it just doesn't accommodate people who want to come here and show some respect,' says the mayor.

Mayor says current location doesn't have enough space to accommodate gatherings

The City of Whitehorse is looking at moving its cenotaph.

The war memorial is currently jammed into a small space between City Hall and the downtown fire hall. A city steering committee is recommending it be re-located to the Pioneer Cemetery on 6th Avenue.

"We think to have a celebration here on one of the busiest roads in our city, it's a safety issue," says Mayor Dan Curtis, "and quite frankly it just doesn't accommodate people who want to come here and show some respect."

The existing memorial recognizes the Boer War, the First World War, the Second World Warand the Korean War.

Curtis says the city hopes to expand the memorial to include Yukoners who served in more recent conflicts.

The re-location project has the support from the Yukon Legion, the Yukon RCMP veterans, and the Yukon Order of Pioneers.

But, the city is looking for federal help with the cost of the move.

City officials say federal money may be available through the Canada 150th Anniversary fund.
