Whitehorse cyclist medevaced after colliding with minivan

A Whitehorse cyclist was medevaced to a Vancouver hospital after colliding with a minivanon Normandy Road Monday afternoon.

RCMP say the 20-year-oldsuffered serious injuries.

Police say the cyclist was riding on a bicycle pathin theTakhiniNorth neighbourhood at around 4:30 p.m.The cyclist reached Normandy Road and attempted to cross the street to reconnect with the path but collided with a mini-van in the street.

RCMP have not said whether speed was a factor in the collision.

A portion of Normandy Roadwas blocked off for several hours on Monday eveningas police studied the scene. Abicycle could be seen lying on the roadwayin front of a parked minivan with a shattered windshield.

People living in the area say large vehicles parked on the street can block drivers' view of where the trail enters the road. Some say parking here should be banned.

"When there's people walking their dogs going across, and especially if they have these big trucks, motor homes, boats in the way, they're crossing before you get a chance to see them," says resident Carolyn Simmons.

Simmons says pedestrians, drivers and cyclists all need to be more careful.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
