Yellowknife RCMP assault case should have gone to court: Mantla

A man who says he was assaulted by a Yellowknife RCMP member is upset the case wasn't dealt with in court.

Kevin Mantla says he told the prosecutor he was against handing the case to the community justice committee.

When that was done despite his objection, Mantla was invited to be part of the meeting with Const.Cory Wallace and the committee.

"And talk about how I felt that day of the incident and how he felt, and I said, 'No,'" Mantla said. "I don't want to face him after what he did to me. So I refused to meet with the community justice.

Mantlasayshe was intoxicated and fell asleep in the courthouse holding cell last year, whenConst. Cory Wallace handcuffed him, dragged him from the cell "like a dog," then punched him in the face, splitting his lip.

On Monday, the prosecutor stayed the assault charge.He says Wallace has accepted responsibility for his actions.

The community justicecommittee also says Wallace made good on an agreement meant to restore justice, but neither will say what Wallace admitted to or what he had to do under the agreement.
