Yukon Catholic bishop moving on to Vancouver Island

Gary Gordon, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Whitehorse,is moving on to take over the Diocese of Victoria, which comprisesVancouver Island and more,in mid-August.

Pope Francis made the announcement Saturday morning from the Vatican.

Gordon, 57, has been bishop of the Diocese of Whitehorse, whichencompasses Yukon and part of northern B.C., for eight years.

He says he's excited about the move to Victoria, B.C.,but will miss the North and "the incredible resilience of the people and especially the people in our small communities."

"It may be tiny and we may be poor but we're not impoverished."

There's no word on who will replace him in Yukon or when.
