Here's who's running in Yukon's rural community elections next month

Nominations for next month's municipal elections in the Yukon closed on Thursday afternoon, with a long list of people running for council seats in several communities.

Municipal election day is Oct. 17 across the territory

Nominations for next month's municipal elections in the Yukon closed on Thursday afternoon, with a long list of people running for council seats in several communities.

Voting day is Oct. 17 for mayors and councillors in Whitehorse, Dawson City, Watson Lake, Carmacks, Faro, Mayo, Teslinand Haines Junction.

Local advisory councils will also be elected or acclaimed in the unincorporated communities of Ibex Valley, Marsh Lake, Mount Lorne, Tagish and Carcross.

Nominations closed at noon on Thursday and some municipalities released their candidate lists soon after. This story will be updated as CBCNews receivesmore confirmed candidates lists.

Five people are running for mayor in Whitehorse and 18 people are running for the six councillor positions.

Outside of the capital, mayors in several communities, including Dawson Cityand Faro, are seeking re-election. The full candidatelists for Yukon's rural communities are listed (alphabetically) below.

Carmacks

The current mayor of Carmacks, Lee Bodie, is not running for reelection. Two people are running to succeed him:

  • Justin Lachance (currently a councillor)
  • Kevin Untershute

Six people are running for the four councillor positions:

  • Azmy Aboulazm
  • Helena Belanger(incumbent)
  • Cory Bellmore
  • Doris Hansen (incumbent)
  • Dennis Mitchell (incumbent)
  • Tara Wheeler

Dawson City

Three people are running for mayor in Dawson City:

  • Stephen Johnson
  • Bill Kendrick (incumbent)
  • Sue Lancaster

Ten people are running for four councillor positions:

  • Lisa Anderson
  • Jimmy Boddie
  • Giulia Cecchi
  • Cud Eastbound
  • Tobias Graf
  • Justine Hobbs
  • Darwyn Lynn

Faro

Two people are running for mayor in Faro:

  • Jack Bowers (incumbent)
  • Lisa Snyder

Eight people are running for four councillor positions:

  • Leonard Faber
  • Taylor Fetterly(incumbent)
  • Gary Jones
  • Sarah McHugh(incumbent)
  • Wendy Michell-Larocque
  • Trevor Noseworthy
  • Michelle Vainio

Haines Junction

Three people are running for mayor in Haines Junction. The current mayor, Bruce Tomlin, is not seeking re-election.

Mayor Trevor Ellis has been acclaimed to another term. The list of candidates for councillor is still to come.

Teslin

Mayor Gord Curran is running again and will face one challenger.

Watson Lake

Watson Lake's incumbent mayor Christopher Irvin seeking election as a councillor this year. Two peopleare running to be mayor:

  • Dale Burdes (incumbent)
  • Christopher Irvin (nowmayor)
  • Denina Paquette(incumbent)
