Burnside inmate sent to surgery after fight

An inmate at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility was sent to hospital on Thursday after an altercation with another offender, says to the provincial government, marking one of three fights at the Burnside jail this week.

An inmate at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facilitywas sent to hospital with face injuriesafter an altercation with another offender, says to the provincial government, marking one of three fights at the Burnside jail this week.

The Justice Department said two inmates got into a fight on Tuesday. The departmentposted the news to their website on Friday.

Officials said one inmate declined treatment, but the second was sent to hospitalon Thursday.

The department said he needed surgery for his facial injuries.Hes expected to stay in hospital for several days.

On Sunday afemale guard was allegedly attackedand knocked unconscious.Policesaid she was taken to hospital and had surgery.

A 21-year-old man is facing a slew of charges includinguttering threats, resisting arrest, three charges of assaulting a peace officer and one charge of assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm.

He's due in courtFeb. 25to answer to those charges.

That incident was not revealed until Justice Minister Lena Diab was questioned after a cabinet meetingon Thursday.

Halifax police said they received a call on Friday morning about a third fight that reportedly happened at the jail on Thursdaynight.

It's still under investigation.
