Convergys closing Cornwallis call centre

Convergys will be closing downits call centre in Cornwallis, N.S., throwing almost 300 employees out of work.

The layoffs will take effect in March and are expected to have an impact on the economies of Digby and Annapolis Royal. Convergys has operated the center since 2004.

"The town of Digby is only a population of 2,200, and [the company] is centred between Digby and Annapolis Royal," said Digby Mayor Ben Cleveland. "Annapolis Royal isa community of about 600 people, so it's a large percentage of our population base."

Employees are being offered to relocate to other Convergys centres in Dartmouth and New Glasgow.

In September, Convergys closed a call centre on theMillbrook First Nations reserve, near Truro, because a client pulled its business from that particular site. That closing put 200 people out of work.
