Halifax council OK's Chebucto widening

A controversial road-widening project in Halifax is back on.

A controversial road-widening project in Halifax is back on.

The regional council approved $2 million for the Chebucto Road project on Tuesday, despite rejecting a construction tender last week.

Some councillors just changed their minds, said Coun. Sheila Fougere, who remains opposed to the road widening in her district.

The project calls fora third, reversing lane to accommodate growing traffic from the Armdale Rotary. Construction isexpected to begin in early July.

The road-widening plan has been approved a number of times over the years, despite protests from some residents in the area. About$6 million has already been spent.

Last week, Coun.Linda Mosher saidthe municipality had purchasedthree homes andhad agreements with the remaining five property owners to buy part of their front yards to allow the widening.
