Man trapped by tree branch during storm Arthur

A man in Onslowhad to be rescued by firefighters after a tree branch fell on him in Saturday'sstorm.

RCMP say firefighters had to cut the branch apart to save the man.

"It was lucky, I guess, that he wasn't seriously injured," said Cpl. Scott MacRae, an RCMP spokesman.

MacRaesaid the man,believed to be in his 50s or 60s, was taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident happened at about 10:30 a.m., three hours after Arthur made landfall in southwest Nova Scotia as a post-tropical storm.

Maximum sustained winds were 110 km/h, though some areas of Halifax saw gusts of 116 km/h. The storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

RCMP have heard about a number of people suffering minor injuries from flying debris.

"The risk is definitely there," MacRae said. "If you really don't need to be out, it's probably best to stay home."

MacRae is also urging people to avoid touching downed power lines.

"All I can say is that's a very dangerous activity," he said. "One instance can be tragic."

Arthur continues to lumbernortheastthrough Nova Scotia. It's expected to leave the Maritimes overnight.
