A fire at a small airport in Hants County has destroyed two aircraft and two hangars, says the facility's general manager.

Fire crews who were called to the Stanley Airport near Windsor, N.S., on Thursday afternoon found the two hangars engulfed in flames, Jim Ward toldCBC News.

Ward said the fire was first noticed by a member of theStanley Sport Aviation Association, the group of privateaircraft owners and flying enthusiasts that operates the airport.

"One of the members that was here in their trailer heard a popping noise and when she looked out, she could see the smoke and it was pretty well engulfed at that point," he said.

Ward arrived at the airport not long after the fire started. He said they were able to pull two aircraftout of one of thehangarsbefore it was engulfed by flames. Fire services arrived on the scene shortly afterward.

Firefighters have since contained the fire and are now mopping up hot spots, he said.

It's not known how the fire started.

The airport is used mostly by small private aircraft.
