Purcell's Cove Route 15 could be axed, group fears

People who live in Purcells Cove, just outside Halifax, are trying to save their bus route.

Halifax Transit wants to eliminate a portion of Route 15 that would cut off about 500 people who live between Williams Lake Road and York Redoubt.

Kevin Hurd, general manager of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron, said cancelling the route is a big problem for his patrons and employees.

"We're home to Canada's largest disabled sailing [group] in the country. It's the largest disabled sailing centre Sail Able and a major part of that is public transportation," he said.

"We employ close to 100 individuals during peak season and many of our employees require public transportation."

Danyele Belliveau, with the Save Route 15 group, hopes locals will pledge to take the bus more often.

"See if we can get more people from the community to take the bus that already exists. So we're asking people to say, [take the bus] one, two three times a week, a month and see if they're willing to follow up on their pledge," she said.

Belliveau said the group will follow-up with people to try to make sure they kept their pledges.
