Shortts Lake searchers recover body of missing kayaker

Nova Scotia RCMP say they have recovered the body of a missing 23-year-old kayaker on Shortts Lake.

Nova Scotia RCMPsay they have recovered the body of amissing 23-year-oldkayaker from Colchester County on Shortts Lake.

RCMP Cpl. Greg Church said they were called to the lake near Truro around 6 a.m.

"Preliminary investigation had determined that a 23-year-old male had tipped his kayak just off shore," he said.

Church said the manhad been kayaking with someone else at the time.

Colchester RCMP Cst. Dal Hutchinson says two men tookseparate kayaks out onto the lake around 5:30a.m.

Both kayaks somehowcapsized and the mentried swimming toshore.

People along the shore heard their cries for help,Hutchinson said, and some went out in their own boats to attempt a rescue.

They were able to pull only one man to safety.

Police dispatched a helicopter to the area and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre also dispatched a cormorant helicopter to help in the search.

By mid-morning, the cormorant was sent back to CFB Greenwood and the RCMP helicopter landed because sun glaring off the water was blinding the pilots.

Police continuedthe search from land and from a police boat, but just before 1:00 p.m., they said the man's body had been recovered.

RCMP say conditions on the lake were calm, "like glass."
