RV driver charged after crash with school bus sends 3 students to hospital

Three students were sent to hospital with minor injuries after a school bus crash Thursday morning on Highway 3 outside of Lunenburg.

A 64-year-old man from Nevadawho was driving a recreational vehicle has been charged following a collision with a school bus Thursday near Lunenburg, N.S., that sent three studentsto hospital with minor injuries.

The RV driver has been charged with failing to stop at a stop sign.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection between Highway 332 and Highway 3 in Lilydale.

RCMP allege the man driving the motorhomedidn't stop and struck the bus, which ended up in a ditch.Police said 28 people were on the bus.

Paul Ash, executive director of the South Shore Regional Education Centre, said the bus was en routePark View Education Centre when the crash occurred. Bluenose Academy students who were on the vehicle had been dropped off prior to the incident.

"There are no majorinjuries reported," Ash said. "Three students weretransported, along with the driver, to the local hospital as a precautionary measure. The rest of those students on that bus were picked up by a second bus and transported on to their high school."

Parents of the three students taken to hospital were contacted right away, he said.

The South Shore Regional Education Centre operates 84 buses to transport its 5,900 students.

"It's very uncommon to have bus accidents of this nature," Ash said.
