Pierre Elliott Trudeau welcomes Cambodian refugees in 1980

As the country prepares to welcome thousands of people fleeing the conflict in Syria, we had a look through the 1980 CBC archives and found a story on the arrival of a family that fled Cambodia for Ontario.

Family had recently moved to Canada as refugees from Cambodia

From the CBC archives: Former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau welcomes a family of Cambodian refugees in 1980.

In December 1980 a Cambodian familygathered in Ottawa to shake hands with the most powerful man in the country at the time: then prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

Theyhad just arrived in the country after living in a refugee camp.

The two brothers, their wives and children came to live in Ontario with the help of Canadian families who sponsored them.
