A suspect has been arrested in the death of an Ottawa woman who died after being attacked on a Caribbean beach, Barbadian Police Commissioner Darwin Dottin announced Monday.

Terry Schwarzfeld, 60, was walking along an isolated stretch of Long Beach with her daughter-in-law when the two of them were mugged on Feb. 28.

Her daughter-in-law, Luana Cotsman of Guelph, Ont., regained consciousness right away, but Schwarzfeld never did.

She was flown back to the Ottawa Hospital's Civic Campus where she died Wednesday morning.

"They have recovered property a camera, jewelry and a kind of imitation firearm that was reportedly used in the commission of the robbery," Edward Evelyn Greaves, the High Commissioner of Barbados, told CBC News.

Greaves said police are still formulating the charges, but they believe they have strong evidence linking the suspect to the crime.

According to the Royal Barbados Police Force, an investigator will also be sent to Canada to speak with Schwarzfeld's daughter-in-law.

Schwarzfeld was a prominent member of Ottawa's Jewish community.
