Ottawa police charge pair with attempted murder in ByWard Market shooting

Ottawa police have charged two men with attempted murder in connection with an early October shooting that critically injured a man in the ByWard Market.

Ottawa police have charged two men with attempted murder in connection with anearly October shooting that critically injured a man in the ByWard Market.

A 27-year-old man was shot multiple times near the cornerof George Street andByWard Market Square around 3 a.m. Oct. 2.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition but survived.

On Tuesdaypolice announced they'd charged two Ottawa men, 28 and 31, with attempted murder, possession of a loaded firearm and careless use of a firearm, among other weapons charges.

The older man, who was arrested Monday, was also charged with carrying a concealed firearm and possessing crack cocaine andamphetamines for the purpose of trafficking.

The younger man, who was arrested the day after the shooting,was also charged with possessing cocaine, crack cocaine and ecstasy for the purpose of trafficking.

He was expected in court today, while the 31-year-old is scheduled to appear on Thursday.

This shooting was Ottawa's 50th of 2016, which set a new record for shootings in Ottawa in a single year.

There have been five more shootings since then.
