Diane Holmes retiring after long Ottawa city council career

Ottawacouncillor Diane Holmes has announced she will be retiring after more than 30 years in city politics.

Her office said Thursday she will not be running in this fall's municipal election.

Holmes' biography on her website said she was first elected to city council in 1982 after a career of volunteering and teaching physical education.

She was born in Montreal and went to McGillfor a physical education degree, having also lived in Halifax.

Holmes had been listed as a nominated candidate on the city's website alongside five others.

Fellow councillors Steve Desroches,Rainer Bloess and Doug Thompson have also said they will not be running again.

Election day for local governments across Ontario is Oct. 27.
