Laser pointers aimed at planes flying into Ottawa airport

Transport Canada said there were two incidents last month where laser pointers have been flashed into the cockpits of planes flying into the Macdonald-Cartier Airport.

Transport Canada said there were two incidents last month where laser pointers have been flashed into the cockpits of planes flying into the Macdonald-Cartier Airport in Ottawa.

In the first incident, on Sept. 5, a Porter Airlines flight from Toronto was flashed with a green laser as it approached the Ottawa runway. On Sept. 23, a WestJet plane flying in from Vancouver reportedly had a green laser pointed in the cockpit for two minutes.

Neither of the Ottawa incidents affected the operation of the aircraft flying according to the incident reports.

A spokesperson for WestJet said in an emailed statement they did not have a report on the incident but said it has happened in this past.

"We have seen this issue several times in the past, and the answer remains the same shining a laser in a manner that could result in injury or serious damage to a persons vision is an incredibly stupid thing to do," said WestJet spokesperson Brie Thorsteinson Ogle.
