1 man dead, another injured in Lowertown shooting

The same man has survived what ended up being two fatal shootings in Ottawa's Lowertown neighbourhood, CBC News has learned.

Homicide detectives are investigating the city's 14th homicide of the year after the shooting death ofCreflo Tansia,18,in front of 380 Murray St., an Ottawa Community Housing building, on Tuesday evening.

Police and paramedics responded tothe double shooting around 8:20 p.m. Neighbours circled a man who had been shot and was lying on a paved pathway in front of nearby rowhouses, according to video of the unfolding scene viewedbyCBC. CBC is not publishing the video because of its sensitive nature.

Paramedics said theyfound one man who was critically injured, while another man was seriously injured. One was loaded onto a stretcher. Tansia died from his injuries at The Ottawa Hospital early Wednesday morning.

The second man, whose injuries are considered not life-threatening,is the same 18-year-oldwho was shot only blocks away just five weeks ago, according to sources.That shooting claimed the life of20-year-old Loris Tyson Ndongozi, a much-lovedaspiring football star, who was not the target of the shooting.

It was the second man, whomCBC is not naming, who wastargeted in that shooting. Police believe the motive in that shooting was a debt of money owed. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a suspect in that case.

Residents shaken after repeated gunfire

Lowertown resident Stephanie, who only gave her first name, lives near the scene of Tuesday's homicide and heard gunfire. She said she feared for her own child.

"Iheard the two gunshots," she said. "I went outside the backyard thinking maybe it was my daughter.... When I got there, it was a young Black man on the ground that had been shot, and it was really sad.

"The only thing I'm afraid about is what if my kids are playing outside and someone comes and my kid's shot by accident, or someone else's young child?"

Some residents of Ottawas Lowertown neighbourhood say they fear for their safety after a second fatal shooting in five weeks.

Donald Bedardwants something done about the violence in the neighbourhood.

"After 30 years of being here, its like a routine,"Bedard said.

"Just a month ago, there was a shooting in the back ... then a few months before that, there was a shooting right in the front here. Then there are stabbings and everything."

A Lowertown resident named Lisa, who also didn't give a last name, said she saw police on the scene after hearing the sound of gunfire.

"It's startingto get scary in this area," she said."Something needs to be done with the gun violence."

Acting Supt. Carl Cartright told CBCpolice will be increasing their presence in the neighbourhood following the homicide. However, Cartright said police do not believe Tuesday night's gunfire represents an ongoing security concern for the neighbourhood.

Police were on scene Wednesday loading a white sedan parked in the area onto a tow truck. No suspects are in custody.

This is the city's 14th homicide of 2021.
