Man wanted on charge of 1st-degree murder in Mitch Paquette's death

Ottawa police have issued an arrest warrant fora 34-year-old Ottawa man in connection with the homicide of Mitch Paquette in the Carlington neighbourhood on Thursday.

Daniel Adjetey-Nelsonis wanted on a charge of first-degree murder. He isconsidered "armed and dangerous," Ottawa police said in a media release issued Friday.

Paquette, 55, was stabbed on Rosenthal Avenue, near the Central Experimental Farm, at about 6:15 p.m. ET Thursday.

It's the city's 14th homicide of the year.

Neighbours heard screams outside home

Neighbours say the incident happened outside the home of Paquette's step-daughter, who they say has at least one child with the suspect.

Jocelyn Dever said she heard shouting that got progressively louder and then children screaming shortly thereafter.

She said one child was running back and forth shouting "Don't let him die, don't let him die."

"That's when I noticed someone was on the ground," Dever said.

Robert Maxwell, who has lived on the street for about 30 years, said he was used to hearing yelling from across the street, but said this time was much worse.

"This was exceptionally really bad," Maxwell said. "Screaming, yelling, hysterical..."

Altercation led to stabbing

Neighbours said they saw a big man come out of the house with a large knife and then got into a physical altercation with Paquette in which hewas stabbed.

Maxwell said Paquette sat down after he was stabbed.

"Then, within a minute, he keeled over," he said.

One neighbour who didn't want their name used because of safety concerns, said they were in shock because they'd seen the man earlier the same afternoonsitting on the steps of one of the Ottawa Community Housing row houses, laughing and chatting with another neighbour.

The man was taken to hospital in "very serious" condition, police said. He was later pronounced dead.

Adjetey-Nelson is known to police and was out on bail while awaiting trial next year for assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harmand carrying a concealed weapon in connection with a stabbing in May.
