Major Ottawa roads affected by construction starting Sunday

Some of the ways to get in and out of Ottawa's core will be different starting Sunday thanks to light rail-related construction.

The Transitwayis closing from LaurierAvenue to Lees station, including the Campus station at the University of Ottawa, so the bus-only road can be converted to light rail lines.

Buses will then move to Nicholas Street, meaning a bus-only lane is being set up heading north along with a lane for the rest of traffic.

Southbound Nicholas Street heading towards Highway 417will be two lanes shared between buses and vehicle traffic.

Earlier this week, city councillor and transportation committee chair Keith Egli said people should avoid Nicholas Street if they can.

Queen Street changing to one-way until 2018

Queen Street is also changing Sunday from a two-way street to a one-way eastbound street heading toward downtown from Bay Street to Metcalfe Street.

Crews will be overhauling the street to improve it for the extra foot traffic expected when Lyon and Parliament light rail stations open on Queen Street in 2018.

Westbound vehicles will be directed one street south to Albert Street while this construction work is happening.

Other one-day events that could affect traffic on Sunday are:

• Carleton University student residence move-out from 8 a.m. to noon closes the school's Colonel By Drive entrance, meaning everyone driving will be coming and going on Bronson Avenue.
• An Armenian Genocide Anniversary march is happening from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., with demonstrators affecting traffic as they head east from Parliament Hill to Sandy Hill on Wellington and Rideaustreets, north on Cobourg Street and east on Heney Street.
• The MS Walk for multiple sclerosis is happening around the Canadian War Museum from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., which could affect traffic from time to time on Wellington Street, the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway and Parkdale Avenue.
• The Alive to Strive Run to raise awareness of kidney disease will close Hog's Back Road from Prince of Wales Drive to Riverside Drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
