Ottawa shooting: Parliament Hill closed, Elgin remains closed

Parliament Hill remains closed to the public and a sections of Elgin Street remains closed after Wednesday's shootings in downtown Ottawa.

Elgin Street is closed from Wellington Street to Queen Street, due to the ongoing police investigation. The National War Memorial is off Elgin between those two streets.Pedestrian access in the war memorial area is alsolimited.

Wellington Street, which provides access to Parliament Hill, was closed fromO'ConnorStreet toMacKenzieAvenue, but reopened at about 2:30 p.m.

People are asked to use the sidewalks on the west side of Elgin Street only, police say.Pedestrians will not be permitted on Elgin Street north of Sparks Street.

No pedestrian access is permitted on Wellington Street from Elgin Street northbound to Elgin Street southbound.

Pedestrians who wish to access the Wellington/Rideau area may do so via the National Arts Centre staircase.

Ottawa police are warning the city's residents to expect "an increased police presence in key areas in the coming days" after the fatal shooting of a soldier at the National War Memorial and the death of the shooter at Parliament Hill.

The downtown Ottawasecurity perimeter, in place for much of the day Wednesday, was lifted Wednesday night.
