Police post Adjokatcher murder re-enactment to YouTube

Ottawa police have released new details in the unsolved 2013 homicide of Malik Adjokatcher, as well as a re-enactment of the shooting.

On May 14, the 24-year-old was shot outside of a home at 119Ritchie St., just before midnight. Neighbours said they heard threeshots fired.

Adjokatcher was shot in the chest. He raninto a nearby home to escape, where a responding officer tried to resuscitate him. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was known to police and was involved in gang activity, police sources told CBC News at the time.

Adjokatcher pleaded guilty to aggravated assaultin 2009 and was sentenced tomore than two years in jail after a stabbing in 2008. He had originally been charged with attempted murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

He was also convicted of drug and breach of probation charges in 2008.

Det. Chris Benson with the major crimes unit confirmed Adjokatcher was killed with a handgun and said a handgun was fished out of a sewer on Orleans Blvd last week. Ballistics test are being conducted on the gun to see if it is a match.

In a video created by Ottawa police, lead investigator Sgt. Dan Brennan released new information about the incident itself.

Brennan said Adjokatcher had been socializing with friends when an unknown suspect walked up to him and shot him several times in an unprovoked attack.

"The suspect was last seen running towards an older-model, dark passenger van," Brennan said in the video. "This van was then seen speeding northbound on RitchieStreet.

"The suspect is described as a dark-skinned male of average height and weight with medium-length dark hair."

Using YouTube a new police tactic

Brennan said a YouTube post is a new way for police to reach out to a younger audience in a search forwitnesses.

"That's why the video is posted on YouTube, in hopes that we could obtain more people that way than more traditional media outlets," he said.

While many people on Ritchie Street said they didn't want to comment on the record because they're scared to publicly talk about the crime, one resident said this latest strategy may be effective.

"Nowadays that's where most people spend all of their time, on YouTube and on social media, so if it's going togetout there that's the place they're going to be," said Ivan Potts.
