Suspected jihadist arrested in Gatineau on unrelated charges

Police in Gatineau arrested Ismael Habib on charges of uttering threats, harassment and identity fraud last weekend. The Montreal man's lawyer said RCMP seized Habib's passport because they believe he was preparing to travel to a terrorist training camp.

The lawyer of a Montreal man charged with uttering threats saidRCMP have confiscatedhis client'spassport because they were concerned he was aboutto leave the country to train with jihadists.

Ismael Habibwas arrested in Gatineau andcharged with uttering threats, harassment,being in possession of a false driver's licenseand making fake ID.

The 28-year-old is not charged with any terrorism related offenses.

"I learned that his passport was taken by the RCMP in order for him not to leave the country because we have heard that he was planning to leave the country to join the jihadists," saidJacquesBelley, Habib's lawyer.

According to Belley, the RCMP did not believeHabib was planning to carry out a terrorist attack here in Canada.

Planned to travel to training camp

Habib was arrested after aGatineau woman complained topolice he had threatened her.

Belley told Radio-Canada thatafter Habib'sarrest, the womanlooked through his tablet and discovered hehad been in contact with another womanin Turkey, and was planning to travel to a training camp.

RCMP would not confirm that they seized Habib's passport,

Habibis scheduled fora bail hearingtomorrow.
