Police investigating 2 suspicious fires at vacant homes within blocks of each other

Ottawa police are investigating two suspicious fires in Vanier that broke out within an hour of each other early Monday morning.

No injuries reported in either fire, which happened early this morning east of downtown Ottawa

Firefighters battle a suspicious fire at 318 Palace St. in Vanier, just off Montreal Road, early Monday morning. An hour earlier, another suspicious fire broke out on Cyr Avenue just three blocks away. (CBC)

Ottawa police are investigating two suspicious fires in Vanier that broke out within an hour of each other early Monday morning.

The first fire occurred at 293 Cyr Ave., a single-storey vacant house with a detached garagejust off Montreal Road, at about 12:30 a.m, according to Ottawa's fire department.

Flames and smoke were coming from the houseand the two-car garage was engulfed by fire.

Crews got the flames under control within about 15 minutes.No injuries were reported and an estimate on damage was not yet available Monday morning.

2nd fire occurs just 3 blocks away

The second fire broke out at 318 Palace St.an hour laterat1:30 a.m.

The two-storey house with an attached garagealso sits just off Montreal Road,three blocks west of Cyr Avenue where the first fire occurred.

People who called 911 told dispatchersthe garage was on fire and that the home was vacant and for sale.

When firefighters arrivedthey saw that a shed and fence were also engulfed in flames.

Crews managed to get the flamesunder control within half an hour.No injuries were reported and an estimate on damage was not yetavailable Monday morning.
