Truck driver in fatal collision with cyclist Nusrat Jahan charged

The driver of the heavy truck that struck and killed a 23-year-old cyclist in downtown Ottawa last week has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

The driver of the heavy truck that struck and killed a 23-year-old cyclist in downtown Ottawa last week has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

Ottawa police saidSteven Bruce Conley, 38, turned himself in late Friday morning.

Conley was released on a promise to appear in court, and is scheduled to appear on Oct. 3.

The criminal negligence causing death charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, while dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum penalty of 14 years.

Nusrat Jahan died when she was struck at the intersection of LaurierAvenue and Lyon Street around 7:50 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1. She had been cycling in the segregated bike lane, and the truck was making a right turn onto Lyon when the collision occurred.

She died at the scene.

A spokesperson forTomlinson, whose truck Conley was driving at the time, wouldn't comment on how long the accused had been driving for them or what his job status is.

"This unfortunate occurrence is before the courts so it would be inappropriate for us to comment at this time," said Dale Harley in a brief telephone interview.

Police say their investigation into the collision continues. The collision investigation unit is still looking to speak to anyone with information.
