A new bylaw comes into effect in Ottawa on Friday regulating ride-hailing services such as Uber.

Last spring, the City of Ottawa passed new "vehicle-for-hire regulations" the first jurisdiction in Ontario to do soto bringride-hailing services like Uberin line with the city's taxi bylaws.

The new rules that come into effect today mean the companies must secure an licence to operate legally in the city, and must ensure their drivers meet various regulations.

Butgetting to this point has been a bumpy ride for both Uber and the taxi industry.
