Books bring the farm to the classroom

Farmers and agriculture representatives will be breaking out the booksto read to students inP.E.I. classrooms next week.

About 30 producers will read aloud about farming and will also talk about the importance of agriculture to students inkindergarten to Grade 6.

The P.E.I. Agriculture Sector Council organized theevent as part of the inaugural Canadian Agriculture Literacy Week, Feb. 26 to March 3, sponsored by Farmer's Credit Canada.

Executive director Lloyd Dalziel said he hopes the project will make Island students smarter consumers.

"There's more and moreand it increases all the time a disconnect between consumers and the reality of producing food and where the food is coming from," said Dalziel.

"So what we really want to do is connect with people at a young age and just explain to them, you know, where there food is coming from, how it's being produced and the importance of having that food produced here locally."
