Brookvale Provincial Ski Park plans to open Jan. 9 thanks to recent cold weather that has been ideal for snowmaking.

About half a dozen snowmaking machines are going at the park in hopes of getting the hills covered by late next week.

"The snowmaking conditions right now, with the temps, are really good," said Allan Matters, park superintendent.

"We're working on our main run right now and hoping to move to another one in the next couple of days."

Matters says it would be great if temperatures stay in the -8 C to -12 C range.

"And we can still always make more snow if we need it."

Last year, the hill opened Dec. 23 after a number of snowstorms, but typically the hill isn't able to open until January, says Matters.

Earlier in December, Matters had hopedthe park would be ready for a New Year's Eve opening, but the weather remained too mild.
