Charlottetown man surrenders to police after 4 hours barricaded in building

A Charlottetown man is being sent for a mental health assessment after barricading himself in a government office on St. Peters Road Tuesday night.

Charlottetown Police Services say a 911 call from the Family and Human Services office was received just before 5:00 p.m.

When police arrived, theman inside, produced a small knife. Crisis negotiators were brought in and the situation was resolved peacefully around 9:30 p.m.

It took police more than four hours to resolve the situation.

Deputy Chief Brad MacConnell says people inside the building were not harmed. MacConnell says they were in a separate part of the building.

"There were no immediate threats towards them, he didn't threaten them, he didn't make any threatening gestures," saidMacConnell

Charges will be considered at a later date.
