Charlottetown sticking with its horses

The City of Charlottetown is not considering following Montreal's lead and banning horse-drawn carriages from its streets.

The mayor of Montreal decided to bring in a year-long moratorium after several incidents, including a runaway horse last month.

In an email to CBC News, a Charlottetown city official said there is only one operator doing historical tours on the downtown streets, and the city's experience with the operator has been positive.

Emerald Carriage Tours is currently providing reduced service, working with cruise ships only, due to a lack of stable facilities in the city.

Animal welfare supporters have applauded Montreal's decision, saying paved roads and busy traffic aren't good for horses.
