P.E.I. delegates have opposing views on federal NDP leadership review

Two delegates from Prince Edward Island who attended the federal New Democrat Party's national convention in Edmonton each had different views on the leadership of Tom Mulcair.

Delegates voted 52 per cent in favour to proceed with an election to replace Tom Mulcairwith a new leader for the party.

Islander Leo Cheveriesaid he was in favour of the leadership review.

"I think that there was a certain concern around the loss of seats of the NDP seats in the Maritimes. And also that we need to move forward and think about 2019," said Cheverie.

"I think some people thought that by 2019 that maybe it might be better to have a new leader in place and work to rebuild the party."

But Joe Byrne, a delegate andP.E.I. member of the Federal Council of the New Democratic Party, said he was not in favour of finding a new leader.

"I was disappointed. I was hoping that ... well, that people would have voted for to not have a leadership review," said Bryrne.

"On the other hand, that's the way the process works and so the members decided that we're going to have this and so we'll move to the next step."

Mulcair will stay on as leader of the NDP until his successor is chosen on the next two years.
