P.E.I. government reviews affordable childcare investment for O'Leary

The P.E.I. government is planning to invest in more early years centres in the O'Leary area.

Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Hal Perry said the department wants to boost affordable childcare in western P.E.I.

The topic of affordable childcare was raised during question period Thursday.

"I notice on thegovernment website 47 centres registered on P.E.I. and none in Tignish and Tyne Valley," saidO'Leary-Inverness Liberal MLA RobertHenderson.

"With the recent closure of Kinderstart early year centre in Bloomfield,this is leaving a huge void for parents in the riding of O'Leary and Inverness, with limited access to affordable childcare. Will the minister be calling for proposals in the near future?"

Perry said two applications for licensing are being reviewed.

Childcare centres have to be in operation for a minimum of six months before an application can be made to the childcare facilities board.
