The 40th meeting of state and provincial leaders from northeastern North America will renew the group's commitment to fighting climate change, says P.E.I. Premier Wade MacLauchlan.

This year's meeting has energy, environment and climate change as a focus.

"We're working very hard on the issue of energy and how we can address climate change where there are technological breakthroughs, where there are opportunities to have collaborative approaches across the border," said MacLauchlan.

The premier said that the region represented by the five premiers and six governors has already made strong commitments to carbon emission reduction.

Looking ahead

The group will meet in P.E.I. next year.

MacLauchlan said that meeting will add a business-to-business component.

"We're looking to find additional ways to build the economic growth and trade that we share as a region," he said.

The meeting of governors and premiers began Sunday and closes Monday.
