Fish kill reported on Mill River

Provincial and federal environment officials are on the scene of a fish kill on Mill River in western P.E.I. Monday morning.

It is the second fish kill to be reported in the area in four days.

Officials and volunteers from the local watershed group are walking the banks of the Mill River looking for more dead fish. The fish found Monday morning were considered particularly large. This is a concern, said provincial freshwater fisheries biologist Rosie MacFarlane, because the larger fish are the best breeders.

Officials are still trying to determine the extent of a fish kill on the Trout River that happened Friday. That event occurred after a heavy rain Friday morning.

Friday's fish kill was the third in three years on the Trout River. The previous two were caused by pesticide runoff, according to the province. It will be two weeks before test results can determine what caused this weekend's fish kills.
