16 medals won by Special Olympics P.E.I. team at winter games

The Special Olympics P.E.I. team will be bringing home 16 medals from the Special Olympics Canada 2016 Winter Games.

The medal count includes 10 gold medals, three silver, and three bronze.

The games wrapped up Saturday in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador with athletes winning medals in floor hockey, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.

The floor hockey team, the Warriors won gold in their division, beating Team Newfoundland 7-2 in the gold medal game.

Ellen MacNearney won a silver medal in the 1km cross-country skiing event and will also bring home a bronze medal from the 5K race.

Michael Morris will bring home two gold medals after coming in first in the 1km cross-country skiing Saturday. He had picked up a gold medal for the 100m race Friday.

Amie Sullivan won three gold medals in cross-countryskiing taking first in the 1km on Saturday, and first in the 100m and 500m races Friday.

Tommy Ling won silver for his second place finish in the 2.5km cross-country race.

Janet Crarchuk will bring home double gold in after winning the 200m and 400m in snowshoeing on Friday. She also won a bronze in the 100m Saturday.

Teammate John Rafuse will bring home a medal of each colour. He won a gold in the 200m snowshoe race, silver in the 800m, and bronze in the 400m.

Earlier in the week, figure skater Alyssa Chapman won a gold medal in the Level 3 Dance Solo.

The team was made up of 28 athletes and 14 coaches and mission staff.

In a Facebook post, Special Olympics PEI wrote, "Gold: 10 Silver: 3 Bronze: 3. Smiles, High Fives, and new Friends: Thousands. Everyone had at least one personal or team best attained through the duration of the games - well done everyone! #HardWorkPaysOff#Believers. Thank you @Cornerbrook2016 and @SpecialOCanada!"

The team celebrated their week in Corner Brook by attending the closing dance, a highlight for athletes who attend the games.
