Charlottetown's new Montessori school readies for first year

P.E.I.'s newest private school is getting ready to open its doors in September.

The Montessori School of Charlottetown is being funded by the Homburg Institute, and is located in the National Bank Tower in downtown Charlottetown.

Tuition is $12,000 a year per student, with reduced rates for siblings, and is attracting a wide range of families.

"We're getting Island families who have been here for generations, some who know about Montessori, some who are new to it," said executive director Wraychel Horne. "We're getting new Canadian families who want a private school education experience, Montessori or not.

"And then we're also getting folks from away who have come back home, so Vancouver families, Calgary, Ottawa, folks who could open their front door and have a choice of Montessori schools are thrilled that we're now opening the doors here."

So far, the school has more than 20 students registered for kindergarten to grade six, with plans to add intermediate and high school classes in the coming years.

There are another 65 who are currently too young for the school, but are already pre-registered.

The Montessori School is holding an open house on Saturday, Aug. 6, to see if any other Island families are interested for September.
