New food bank being planned in Crapaud to serve central P.E.I.

Plans are in the works for a food bank in the central area of Prince Edward Island to help those in need living in the region.

Plans are in the works for a food bank in centralPrince Edward Island to help those in need living in the region.

Sisters Jackie and Jenny Myers and their friend, Marianna Burda, hopeto have it open by Mayand expect to offer the service three days a week in Crapaud, P.E.I,after learningthere was a need.

"One evening, Marianna's daughter came home and said that a family that she knew was in need, said Jackie Myers.

"So she rounded up some food just in the little, tiny village of Victoria and delivered it to them."

The friends then got talking and brainstormed the idea of opening asmall food pantry in Crapaud, which is centrally located between the citiesCharlottetown and Summerside.

"Alot of people, if they don't have food, they probably don't have gas or maybe even not a vehicle to get to townto get to the food bank," surmised Myers.

The CrapaudCommunity Council is giving the group space rent-freein its professionalbuilding.

The women created a Facebook group called the Southshore Food Cooperative.

Donations are being made and volunteers have offered to help,Myerssaid.
