Officials warn against Covehead bridge jumping

More people than usual are attempting to jump off the Covehead Bridge, according to Parks Canada officials.

More people than usual arejumping off the Covehead Bridge, according to Parks Canada officials.

The bridge is located in Covehead, on the province's north shore.

A sign is posted warningpeople not to jump, but that doesn't deter everyone.

Last year, six fines were issued at a minimum of $120. The maximum fine is $5,000.

So far this year no one has been fined, but several warnings have been given.

"We've heard from our visitors, our staff, and from fishermen that they're worried about people getting hurt jumping off the bridge," Greg Bryant, human resources manager at Parks Canada said.

"Our staff know how dangerous the piling on the bridge are, and how sharp some of the metal is under the water level. We are seeing more bridge jumping over the last few weeks than last year, when as you may remember it was quite rainy."

The RCMP is working with Parks officials to enforce the ban on bridge jumping.
