P.E.I. Opposition want asbestos removed from schools

P.E.I.'s Official Opposition wants the provinceto deal with the asbestos found in ceiling tiles in seven Island schools.

Progressive ConservativeOpposition education critic Steven Myers says it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to dealing with the issue.

Low levels of asbestos were found in the ceiling tiles at the seven schools after an inspection was ordered in schools that had the tiles installed before 1990.

The inspections came after asbestos was found at Three Oaks High School during pre-renovation work.

Acting superintendent for theEnglish Language School Board, Bob Andrews,said parents were notified and there is no health risk if the ceiling tiles are left undisturbed.

"The issue needs to be addressed right away and shouldn't be allowed to drag on for another decade," said Myers.

"There's three months left in the school year so there's ample time for government to have a plan in place to address this once classes end."
