Top axemen aim for national championship in Charlottetown

Eight of the topprofessional axemen in Canada will compete for the theCanadian Champions Trophy in Charlottetown June 30 and July 1.

The men will begin qualifying for the top prize at 8 p.m. on June 30 in Victoria Park. The main event will be held July 1 at 6:30 p.m.

The axemen will compete in a knock-out system, going through four disciplines in a back-to-back relay format.

The eight competitors will try to beat each other the following:

• Stock saw: using a chainsaw to cut two circles (or "cookies") from a block of wood;
• Underhand chop: using an axe to chop through a horizontal block of wood, while standing on top of it;
• Single buck: using a two-metre cross-cut saw to cut a singular cookie from a block of wood;
• Standing block chop: using an axe to chop through a vertical block of wood raised at chest height;
