P.E.I. MLA wants more road signs for Basin Head beach

An Opposition MLA says Basin Head Provincial Park would attract more visitors if it was easier to find.

Colin Lavie, who represents the area in northeastern P.E.I., wants the provincial government to put up more signs directing people to the area.

He said it's one of the most popular beach destinations in the province and a tourism anchor for eastern P.E.I. even though there's very little signage.

"Eighty thousand people a year take in Basin Head and this government does not have a single sign to promote it," Lavie said. "How many more people do you think would be at Basin Head if we had the proper signage? "

Lavie said he has been asking for more signs for the for past three years. In the legislature on Tuesday, he once again asked Heath MacDonald, Economic Development and Tourism minister, to consider it.

MacDonald said he would look into the issue, but noted many visitors come to P.E.I. for its pristine environment and may appreciate the lack of "signage litter."

"We want to continue to advance the tourism industry, but we also want to maintain what we already have that is really good," he said.
