Charlottetown man charged, illegal cigarettes seized

The RCMP has charged a 68-year-old Charlottetown man after a vehicle stop allegedly netted more than 42,000 contraband cigarettes.

The RCMP has charged a 68-year-old Charlottetown man after a vehicle stop allegedly netted more than 42,000 contraband cigarettes.

The arrest was made on June 9 just before 4 p.m. by police officers with the Island's RCMP Federal Investigative Unit. The 42,800 contraband cigarettes have an estimated street value of $8,560, according to the RCMP.

The man charged is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 25. He is facing charges under the Excise Act and the Provincial Tobacco Tax Act.
