Francophone fishermen to be honoured for contributions

The Acadian and Francophone Chamber of Commerce of P.E.I. says the contributions of French-speaking fishermen to the provincial economy have been overlooked for many years.

But that will change on Nov. 29 when the Chamber will be hosting a bilingual luncheon for about 100 fishermen and their helpers at the Acadian Musical Village[Centre Expo-Festival] in Abram-Village.

"In this case, what we're trying to do is recognize any fisherman that is at least 50 years old and has spent a minimum of 20 years on the water,"explained Martin Marcoux, a spokesman for the Chamber.

Fishermen and helpers are asked to register and submit a photo for the Pioneer Francophone Fishermen's Luncheon by Thursday, he said. The event is open to retired fishermen and those who have changed careers as long as they meet the criteria.

Along with farming and tourism, Marcoux explained that fishing is a major contributor to the provincial economy.

Meet old friends and share stories

At the event, fishermen and helpers will receive a certificate recognizing their contributions. There will also be music at the event as well as a chance for fishermen to meet old friends and share stories about their experiences, he said.

The luncheonis scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.

Marcoux said family members of certificate recipients and the public are also invited to attend.
