Flu outbreak hits O'Leary hospital, restricts visitors

A flu outbreak at Community Hospital in O'Leary has resulted in immediate visitor restrictions. There are four confirmed cases of influenza and three or four staff experiencing flu-like illness at the facility, Health PEI said ina written release Friday.

  • Immediate family members only.
  • Only two visitors per patient at once.
  • Visits to be brief 15 minutes.
  • No children under 12 allowed to visit.

Those coming to the hospital, including visitors and people coming in for other health care services, are reminded to clean their hands before and after entering a patient's room, department and upon entering and leaving the facility.

Alcohol hand rinse stations are available throughout the hospital.

The situation will be reassessed Monday morning, said officials, and hospital administration will provide a further update after that.

Health PEI is also reminding Islanders to make the time to get a flu vaccine as it is the most effective way to prevent getting sick with influenza, the release added.
