More treat than trick: Tips for a safe Halloween

The Kings District RCMP is offering safety tips to P.E.I. trick or treaters this Halloween as well as reminding parents that some communities havecurfews in place tonight.

Safe trick or treating

The RCMP is advising trick or treaters to travel the streets with an adult or a group of friends in a well-known area, and to go down one side of a street at a time, only crossing at a corner.

As well, the RCMP is advising that trick or treaters only go to well-lit houses,wait outside a house for treats and don't go inside a house unless you know the owners.

Other tips include wearing a costume that is visible at night, preferably with reflective materials, wearing makeup instead of masks for better vision, carrying a flashlight, watching for cars pulling out of driveways and having a parent inspect treats before eating them at the end of the night.

Curfews

Parents and trick or treaters are reminded that many communities on the Island have curfews in place tonight. The curfew in places such as Souris, Montague, Georgetown and Morellis 8 p.m. Tignish's curfew tonight is 7 p.m. while trick or treaters in Alberton and O'Leary are required to be off the streets by 7:30 p.m.

Tips for motorists

Motorists are reminded to drive with extra caution this Halloween, especially since children will be excited and may forget to cross streets safely. The RCMP says trick or treaters may also forget to look for cars backing out of driveways.

Tips for homeowners

Homeowners are asked to make sure their home and doorway are well lit and that sidewalks and pathways are cleared for trick or treaters. As well,homeowners are advised to avoid using displays with open flames.
