Maritime Electric has started a new campaign urging Islanders to make the switch to LED lights.

The utility has created educational flyers and launched a contest where customers can win up to $250 worth of LED lights.

"We've basically shown people that LED lights really are the most cost-effective lights," said Maritime Electric spokeswoman Kim Griffin.

Can save $50 a bulb

LED lights can last as long as 20 years and can save people about $50 a bulb in electricity costs, she said.

The campaign is called Lighting it Forward, and is part of a conservation plan submitted to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission.

The rest of the plan was rejected because the commission felt it would not make a difference to energy consumption.

IRAC said it is waiting to see the provincial government's energy strategy before directing Maritime Electric on its conservation plan.
